STEPS TO WRITING AN ICON

The process of making an icon is called "Icon Writing." There are
many complex steps involved, each having a different religious
significance. The image, quite simply, starts dark and as the steps are done,
it becomes light. Icons are made with egg tempera paints, which
are natural pigments from the earth, such as rocks and plants,
which are combined with egg yolk as a binder.
All gold halos are made from 23 karat gold leaf.
